Working with aging survivors and the second generation: Interdisciplinary perspectives in a european contextInternational conference at ESRA, Oct. 9 – 10, 2007
For two days, 77 psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, nurses and social workers from 15 countries met in Vienna to share their knowledge, exchange ideas and work together to maximise their efforts to provide the best possible help for Survivors. The seminar’s aim was to bring together health and social work professionals directly involved in the care and treatment of Survivors and the Second Generation. They discussed a wide range of aspects and problems concerning the psychosocial support of aging Survivors. For Survivors, the challenges of old age such as illness, isolation, vulnerability or helplessness are intensified by the suffering and loss they experienced during the Holocaust. For those working with Survivors, meeting their special requirements in this phase means a particular challenge, too. The sessions – with alternating papers and workshops – were chaired by Judith Hassan from Jewish Care – Shalvata in London, Martin Auerbach from AMCHA, Israel, and Fedia Jacobs from the Sinai Centrum, Netherlands. The conference was organised by ESRA and sponsored by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany. |
